Hi Neighbour!

G'mar Chatima Tovah!

Today at sundown, Yom Kippur begins the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Wishing our Jewish neighbours a blessed and prayerful Yom Kippur! G'mar chatima tova!

On October 9, Councillor Pasternak organised a time with our fellow Toronto City Councillors to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, which marks the start of the Jewish High Holy Days leading up to Yom Kippur. We heard the blowing of the shofar and ate apples dipped in honey. It was wonderful to spend this meaningful time with my colleagues who celebrate this holy time of year.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! I’m thankful for our vibrant Willowdale community and the opportunity to serve you. I also wanted to add thanks to the first responders who attended to my family after the accident last week. They were kind, patient and thoughtful. I hope everyone enjoys the holiday weekend alongside family and friends!

Spaghetti Town Halls COMING SOON. RSVP Today!

Just a reminder, we kick off our first Spaghetti Town Hall NEXT THURSDAY, October 17 at Brebeuf College for Newtonbrook East.

We're thrilled to have the Brebeuf College Senior Concert Band add a lively musical touch to the evening. The meeting will include representatives from the following divisions:

  • Toronto Police Service to discuss safety in the community

  • Transportation Services to share how to address road safety and traffic calming

  • Parks and Recreation to discuss ongoing park developments

  • Agincourt Community Services that provides outreach to local encampments

  • Bayview Cummer Neighbourhood Association and Silverview Neighbourhood Association representatives to share how you can get connected, and

  • Crime Stoppers to discuss community safety.

We are excited to have students from Brebeuf College and St. Joseph Morrow who will be assisting with our gathering. It will be a great opportunity to connect in a deeper way with the community!

Willowdale West will have a Halloween-Themed Spaghetti Townhall on Tuesday, October 29, and yes, there will be candy for kids!

Details for this town hall and the Willowdale East Town Hall will be shared in upcoming emails.

Hey West Lansing! We look forward to the Gwendolen Pizza Playdate and Consultation happening next week. If you can’t make it, or even if you can, please Click Here to fill out the survey.

WILLOWDALE CLIMATE ACTION ROUNDTABLE UPDATE

In our ongoing commitment to bringing tangible actions to Willowdale for environmental protection and climate action, we were thrilled to host our fourth Willowdale Climate Action Roundtable on October 5th. This wonderful event was made possible in partnership with Seniors for Climate Action Now (who provided delicious snacks), ClimateFast, and the Green Neighbours Network of Toronto.

A huge thank you to Willowdaler Jane Garthson for championing the Climate and Health discussion. Her vision and dedication to raising climate awareness in our community truly inspire us.

We also want to give a special shout-out to our incredible guest speakers:

Keith Brooks, Environmental Defence Canada

Mili Roy, Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment

How-Sen Chong, Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA)

Michelle Hjort, Energy Neighbour

These knowledgeable specialists shared invaluable insights that enriched our discussions.

Our next steps involve coordinating a Day of Action to advocate for Cummer Station to be included in the Metrolinx subway expansion. This will be an opportunity for families, community members, and climate champions to go door-to-door, petitioning for this important initiative that will significantly impact the future of our neighbourhood.

We’re excited to continue our collaboration and strengthen climate action in Willowdale!

MODERNIZED SYSTEM FOR REGISTERING TO RECREATIONAL AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS

The City of Toronto will launch a new registration and booking system in November for residents to register for recreation and cultural programs and view and book the City's recreation, parks and museum rental spaces that include indoor ice rinks, cultural centres, fire pits, sports fields and stadiums.

The new system will offer a more modern and mobile responsive experience for residents and community organizations to access programs and spaces.

What residents can do to prepare for the switch: Create a new account

Starting in November, residents will be asked to create a new account. The City will support residents through this process with information sessions, quick reference guides and other learning materials – including in-person and virtual information sessions. Residents will need to create their new accounts before winter recreation registration in December.

Throughout October, existing clients should log in to the City’s eFun webpage (https://efun.toronto.ca) the City’s current registration system, to download or print any information they need, such as past receipts for tax purposes, before Thursday, October 31.

Information Sessions: Learn about the new system

Starting Tuesday, October 15, the City will host information sessions where residents can learn about the new system, see a demonstration of the new platform and talk with staff about supports for the transition to the new system. Sessions will be held on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, October 15, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., North York Civic Centre Council Chambers - 5100 Yonge St., North York
  • Thursday, October 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Etobicoke Olympium Olympic Lounge - 590 Rathburn Rd., Etobicoke
  • Monday, October 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Metro Hall Rotunda - 55 John St.
  • Tuesday, October 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Scarborough Civic Centre Council Chambers - 150 Borough Dr., Scarborough

GWENDOLEN PARK PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENTS

The City of Toronto is improving the playground in Gwendolen Park! Help design the new playground by sharing your thoughts on the play equipment in this short survey.

The redesigned playground will include:

  • Play equipment and a pathway connecting to the new playground area that comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). This means that people of varying abilities will be able to play at this playground. Learn more about how playgrounds are made accessible.
  • Playground equipment for ages 2 to 12.
  • Additional seating areas.

Your feedback will help us identify priorities for the playground design. If you have young park users in your home, we strongly encourage you to complete this survey together.

If you prefer to respond to this survey by telephone or via a paper copy, or if you have other accessibility needs that we can help you with, please contact thevishka.kanishkan@toronto.ca.

The survey should take 10 minutes to complete and will close on November 1st, 11:59pm. For more information about the project or to sign up for updates, visit toronto.ca/GwendolenPark.

Based on the true romance story of her East Coast parents’ trailblazing interracial marriage in Toronto and the torrent of letters written to the author’s white mother, trying to dissuade her from marrying a Black man, the novel gives life to these letters, saved for posterity, and expose the pervasive bigotry of the late 1940s.
